The lecture is open to the public.
Salt Lake City — November 2014 — The David Eccles School of Business at the University of Utah is pleased to announce Frank Davis, founder of Food for Health International and Activz Whole-Food Nutrition and 2012 Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year, will be a guest speaker Thursday, Nov. 13 at 4:30 p.m. in the Spencer Fox Eccles Business Building (room LL130) at the University of Utah. The lecture is open to the public.
As an entrepreneur for more than 40 years, Davis has started and built a number of successful ventures including several multimillion-dollar companies. His successes amid the challenges show a consistent ability to innovate and adapt in an ever-changing business environment:
- In 1972, Frank started his first business, D.W.R. Diamonds, which soon became the leading supplier of premium diamond investments to high-profile investors such as Howard Ruff.
- In 1984, Frank started Borges Lamont, a company recognized in 1996 (October 22) by “Inc. 500 Magazine” as one of the fastest-growing companies in the world. Via Borges Lamont, Davis provided employee incentives to small companies by providing name-brand discounted overruns, model changes and excess inventory for a fraction of the cost. As part of the model, Davis also set up and trained independent consultants and linked them through a fax network, as well as beginning the “deal of the day” promotion that is now a staple of direct online marketing. Borges Lamont’s business model was the forerunner to Overstock.com.
- In 1998, Davis launched Golf Connections, which he sold to a publicly traded entity for 10 million shares. It was worth $100 million within months.
- By 2001, Frank had started First Harvest International, a dry-pack food company that soon became a supplier for humanitarian aid. Although he sold the company to NuSkin for $20 million, he continued in the dry-pack food industry, calling his new and current company Food for Health International. Since then Davis has added several pioneering brands to the Food for Health portfolio, including Activz, a brand of premium supplements made from whole foods, and Food Supply Depot, a calorie-efficient brand of emergency and outdoor meals.
- Davis was given the Highest ENRI Factor Award of Merit in 1995; honored as a finalist for the 1996 Entrepreneur of the Year Award; was featured in two leading industry magazines Incentive Strategies and I.M. Magazine; and received the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award in 2012.
Davis has always been actively engaged in volunteering and giving back to the community. Charitable donations are a long-standing part of Davis’s life and part of the culture that he instills at Food for Health. In recent years, he has donated thousands of pounds of food after the Japan tsunami, Haiti earthquake and the attacks of September 11. He also provided 5,750 servings of food to the Engaged Now Foundation to feed mothers and children in Ethiopian villages hit by drought, and just last year, Davis donated $500,000 of premium, complete meals to the Utah Food Bank and Feed America.
The Entrepreneurial Marketing class (ENTP 2010), taught by author, marketing entrepreneur and national talk radio host Kim Power Stilson, is part of the David Eccles School of Business, which offers an undergraduate Interdisciplinary Certificate in Entrepreneurship. The certificate’s innovative and highly collaborative curriculum is intended to complement every major and teaches students how to create, test and launch new ventures.

About Frank Davis and Food for Health International:
Over the years and through a debilitating illness, Davis developed a passion for real nutrition and emergency preparedness. Davis’s innate entrepreneurial skills identified another key niche market: he recognized the need to simplify emergency preparedness for most of the world’s population. He does this by encouraging healthy living with a corporate wellness plan.
